Leeway Tools was built using social media tools. At the start, I made weekly Youtube videos and posted regularly on Instagram. Through this I was able to build out a mailing with more detailed information of what Leeway Tools was all about.

 

Social Media
The YouTube account eventually got deleted due to violations of the community guidelines.

On Instagram, I’ve received multiple content moderation warnings and had to slowly but surely change the language I use to communicate.

Currently, the Leeway Tools Instagram account has been acting strange. For example, DMs have not shown up for weeks, and when collaborators tag me in Reels, the Leeway Tools account does not receive any notifications.

Perhaps it’s a form of shadow banning, or perhaps the platform is trying to nudge people to become “verified” members.

I’m not sure.

 

Email
What I do know is that I’ve never experienced (knock on wood) any of these issues with Mailchimp through which I send the 2x monthly mailing.

Another detail to keep in mind; with Mailchimp, I can simply copy/paste the subscribers base and migrate to another service, in case there would ever be an issue. I have actual control over the audience that I’ve gathered over the years.

Impossible with Instagram or YouTube. The platform owns the audience.

This means that signing up for the mailing is a pretty reliable and uncensored form of communication.

 

Telegram
While a mailing is a great way to send and spread a message, it’s not the best at starting a conversation between people or a group.

Enter ‘Leeway Landscape’ a group chat where we can privately discuss a variety of subjects. 

We use Telegram because: 

🟩 members can choose a username and stay anonymous

🟩 members can hide their phone number

🟩 new members have access to all previous messages, photos, and links shared

🟩 it is not owned by Meta

Mushroom Grow Club
In the group chat, we also organize the ‘Mushroom Grow Club’ which provides access to grow supplies at very low prices and discusses best-growing practices.

We’ve done 10+ editions so far and accumulated a lot of shared knowledge of how to grow your mushrooms.
