Leeway Tools is an entrepreneurial art project based on the results of ongoing cultural research.
This research started at the end of 2020 when I (filmmaker mathys_ideas) met cultural strategist Stef Spijkermans. We started the podcast ‘Follow The Mushroom’ to talk with researchers, philosophers, and artists about the developments in the field of mushrooms, p$y.che.delics, and spirituality.
While exploring these intertwined landscapes that connect many pillars of modern society, I noticed that driven by a capitalist mindset, many aspects are becoming increasingly commodified.
Although commodification can help with spreading wisdom and knowledge it also tends to flatten deeper meaning, mystery, and communal connection.
To deny or dismiss commodification is to ignore a large aspect of modern society. Our world consumes. The amount of consumption and what gets destroyed during the process is where the tension lies.
Over the last five years, Leeway Tools has collaborated with artists, chefs, brewers, researchers, designers, and teachers to create a growing “mycelial network” of humans and their practices.
Through collaboration, boundaries of ownership blur. Like mycelial networks, individual pieces become one and allow for a more holistic perspective towards the ongoing cultural research.
